De Viking Race ontstond omdat er voor de jeugd geen mogelijkheid was om op internationaal niveau met elkaar de competitie aan te gaan. Met een deelname van 288 schaatsers uit 13 verschillende landen, is de Viking Race uitgegroeid tot de grootste internationale schaatswedstrijd van dit moment. De wedstrijd wordt jaarlijks vermeld op de internationale schaatskalender van de Internationale Schaats Unie (ISU). Vele oud toernooi-deelnemers werden deelnemers van Europese- en wereldkampioenschappen of vertegenwoordigden hun land op de Olympische spelen.   

Het toernooi wordt altijd afgesloten met een grote prijsuitreiking en een feestavond in Thialf.

Onze ambitie is het toernooi uit te laten groeien tot een “officieus” wereldkampioenschap voor de jeugd, waarbij we deelnemers vanuit de hele wereld naar Thialf laten komen om deel te nemen aan de Viking Race. Verder willen wij het internationale schaatsen stimuleren en het prestatieniveau van het internationale schaatsen, zowel bij de jeugd als bij de senioren verhogen. Uiteindelijk willen we bereiken dat de Viking Race wordt gezien als het voorportaal van een grote internationale schaatscarrière. Iedereen in de wereld die bekend is met schaatsen moet over enkele jaren weten wat de Viking Race is. Eigenlijk moet je als topper ook aan de Viking Race hebben meegedaan, omdat het gewoon een TOP-toernooi is.

Viking Race
Every year, Skating Training Club Rutten organizes a large international skating tournament at Thialf in Heerenveen. This tournament is known in the skating world as the Viking Race and is seen as the most important skating competition for youth between the ages of 11 and 16. Unofficially, the tournament is also known as the European Youth Championship.

A total of 288 boys and girls aged 11 to 16 from the skating countries in Europe participate in this tournament.

The Viking Race was created because there was no opportunity for the youth to compete with each other at an international level. With a participation of 288 skaters from 13 different countries, the Viking Race has grown into the largest international skating competition. The competition is listed annually on the international skating calendar of the International Skating Union (ISU). Many former tournament participants are now participants in European and World Championships or represented their country at the Olympic Games.

The tournament is concluded annually with a large award ceremony and a party evening in Thialf.

Our ambition is to grow the tournament into an "unofficial" world championship for youth, where we have participants from all over the world come to Thialf to participate in the Viking Race. We also want to stimulate international skating and increase the performance level of international skating, both among youth and seniors. Ultimately, we want to achieve that the Viking Race is seen as the gateway to a major international skating career. Anyone in the world familiar with skating should know what the Viking Race is in a few years. Actually, as a great skater, you must also have participated in the Viking Race, because it is simply a GREAT tournament.
